Describe how different individual may experience living with dementia depending on their age and type of dementia?

Mr X is 67 years old, living with Alzheimer’s disease and he is aware of his diagnosis. He often forgets things such as appointment date, taking medications on time, few friends name and sorting out television channels. But he still can take care of himself as he is able to do his own personal care, going down the shop do his shopping. He can live his life to the full with little reminder and encouragement.
 
Mrs Y is 90 years old and living with vascular dementia. As a result of her previous stroke she has her left side of the body paralysed. She has difficulties mobilising herself without assistance and aid. She finds it difficult to eat and drink independently due to restriction of her movement of arms and body. She gets depressed sometimes just because she can’t do things for herself anymore. 

Different types of dementia at different ages have different types of effect on people. In age group 60-75 years, people with early stage of dementia can manage their life independently with little assistance. But in late 90’s people with dementia may not be able to manage their life independently as their body, strength and coping capabilities deteriorates.

Describe how memory impairment can affect the ability of an individual with dementia to use verbal language?

Memory impairment is one of the most common symptoms of people living with dementia. Due to memory loss individual with dementia often forget words and right words to use in conversation. As a result, people with dementia suffer from speech difficulties such as stammering, slow speech etc.
Because of memory impairment people with dementia may not remember the subject of conversation.
Also people with dementia sometimes can be repetitive.
Due to memory loss, environment, your approach and other medical conditions people with dementia may use inappropriate verbal language.

Explain a person centred approach to enable an individual to use their communication abilities?

Providing Food Menu service with picture is one of the most common person centred approach for non-verbal communicative individual with dementia. It enables individual to choose from the menu identifying picture and written language. Also an interpretation service enables an individual from different culture to use their communication abilities.

Explain the roles of different agencies in safeguarding and protecting individuals from abuse?

CQC: Care quality commission has their duty to set guideline and monitor on health and social care organisations and agencies to protect individual from harm and abuse. If any care provider fails to protect individuals from harm and abuse or does not meet the standard set out by care quality commission then care provider will be forced to close down and pay penalty.

The Police: Police is mostly the first contact to safeguard and protect individual from abuse. Their responsibilities are to record, investigate, safeguard and report.

Safeguarding Adults Board: Their responsibilities are to share information among all local safeguarding agencies and monitor their action and activities regarding safeguarding issues.

How would you use the information about communication abilities and needs of the individual to ensure effective communication?

To establish effective communication and positive interaction you must have to aware of individual’s communication abilities. If you know the person’s communication ability then you have to take into account whether any aid or support necessary to establish effective communication. Suppose an individual with hearing difficulties you are trying to communicate. You have to ensure that individual has his hearing aid on before interaction. If there isn’t any hearing aid then you have to send individual for an assessment to local GP. And if you try to establish written communication with a blind person then you must provide Braille transcription.
