Explain how to overcome barriers to communication

Physical and Mental Barrier: Physical or mental barriers such as blind, hearing impairment, disabilities, cognitive impairment and certain types of dementia are barriers to effective communications. So, we have to identify and use the preferred method of communication in order to  establish effective communication. Methods are body language, gesture, touch, eye contact, facial expression, simple vocabulary, linguistic tone, makaton, minicom or type talk, writing, drawing and picture. Also we may always seek support from other professional  to find out an individual's preferred method of communication.

Language differences: Providing interpreter or translator service. Also can use of makaton, body language, gesture, drawing and picture.
Cultural Differences: By checking individual’s biography or life history, speaking to a family member or friends or someone else who is from same culture or through the country’s cultural representative. 

Identify barriers to effective communication

  • Physical and Mental Barrier: Blind, hearing impairment, disabilities, cognitive impairment and certain types of dementia are barriers to effective communications.
  • Language differences: People from different countries may not be able to communicate in English.
  • Cultural Differences: Some people from different culture do not communicate about certain things with others. 

Describe the factors to consider when promoting effective communication

Medical Conditions such as Mental illness, Disability: Any medical conditions such as hearing loss, impaired vision, mobility problems or speech impairment can affect the effective communication. Also dementia or simple mild cognitive impairment can affect a person’s communication ability. Proper communication method should be known before establishing communication.

Cultural Differences: Communication differences can result from cultural differences. Different cultures use different languages. Also, in some cultures, children are not allowed to speak in front of adult and some kind of body gesture, eye contact, facial expression and touch are inappropriate.

Environment: Environment is one of the most important factors to consider. Ensure the lights, air, temperature, noise, crowd and safety in correct measure before establishing effective communication.
