Mr X is 67 years old, living with Alzheimer’s disease and he
is aware of his diagnosis. He often forgets things such as appointment date,
taking medications on time, few friends name and sorting out television
channels. But he still can take care of himself as he is able to do his own
personal care, going down the shop do his shopping. He can live his life to the
full with little reminder and encouragement.
Mrs Y is 90 years old and living with vascular dementia. As a
result of her previous stroke she has her left side of the body paralysed. She
has difficulties mobilising herself without assistance and aid. She finds it
difficult to eat and drink independently due to restriction of her movement of
arms and body. She gets depressed sometimes just because she can’t do things
for herself anymore.
Different
types of dementia at different ages have different types of effect on people.
In age group 60-75 years, people with early stage of dementia can manage their
life independently with little assistance. But in late 90’s people with dementia
may not be able to manage their life independently as their body, strength and
coping capabilities deteriorates.
